1. Why decks need special paint or coatings

Outdoor timber decks are constantly exposed to UV rays, rain, moisture, foot traffic, and temperature changes. Standard exterior wall paint is not suitable—it can crack, peel, or become slippery. Deck-specific coatings are designed to penetrate timber, flex with movement, and provide slip resistance.

2. Paint vs stain vs oil — what’s the difference?

  • Deck Paint

    • Forms a surface film

    • Best for older or weathered decks

    • Offers strong UV protection and colour coverage

    • Requires more prep and future maintenance

  • Deck Stain

    • Semi-transparent, shows wood grain

    • Easier to recoat than paint

    • Moderate UV protection

  • Deck Oil

    • Penetrates deep into timber

    • Natural look, minimal film build-up

    • Requires more frequent reapplication

👉 For high-traffic family decks, paint or high-build stain is usually preferred.

3. Choosing the right product for your deck

Consider these factors:

  • Timber type (hardwood vs softwood)

  • Sun exposure (full sun decks need UV-resistant coatings)

  • Slip resistance (important for pool areas)

  • Maintenance tolerance (how often you’re willing to recoat)

4. Surface preparation (most critical step)

  1. Remove furniture and sweep debris

  2. Wash with deck cleaner or pressure washer

  3. Allow timber to fully dry (24–48 hours)

  4. Sand rough or splintered areas

  5. Apply primer or decking basecoat if required

⚠️ Poor preparation is the #1 reason deck paint fails.

5. Application tips for best results

  • Paint on dry, mild days (avoid hot sun or rain)

  • Apply thin, even coats

  • Follow timber grain direction

  • Allow full drying between coats

  • Avoid foot traffic for at least 24–48 hours

6. Colour and finish selection

  • Light colours: Stay cooler underfoot, modern look

  • Mid-tone greys/browns: Hide dirt and wear best

  • Dark colours: Stylish but absorb heat and fade faster

Choose low-sheen or satin finishes for safety and durability.

7. Maintenance and lifespan

  • Clean deck every 3–6 months

  • Touch up high-wear zones early

  • Recoat every 2–4 years depending on exposure
