1. Check the Condition of the Wallpaper

Before painting, ensure the wallpaper is securely adhered to the wall.Loose seams, bubbling, or peeling sections must be repaired first. Use wallpaper glue to reattach any lifting edges and remove any air bubbles with a smoothing tool.If the paper is heavily damaged or stained, it’s better to remove it completely before painting.

2. Clean and Degrease the Surface

Wallpaper can trap dust, oil, and smoke residue. Clean the surface with a mild detergent and water, and allow it to dry fully.Avoid over-wetting, as moisture can loosen the adhesive beneath the wallpaper.

3. Apply a Suitable Primer

A high-quality oil-based or shellac primer is essential. This seals the wallpaper surface, prevents bubbling, and blocks any patterns or glue stains from bleeding through the paint. If you use a water-based primer directly on wallpaper, it may soften the adhesive and cause peeling.

4. Use Light, Even Coats of Paint

Apply two or more thin coats of paint rather than one thick layer.Thick coats increase moisture exposure, which can loosen wallpaper seams.Use a roller for even coverage and a brush for edges or corners.

5. Avoid Painting Textured or Vinyl Wallpaper

Vinyl-coated or embossed wallpapers repel paint and lead to uneven results. If the wallpaper has a plastic-like surface, lightly sand or remove it before painting.

6. Manage Moisture and Temperature

Paint in a dry, well-ventilated room.Avoid painting on humid days or in rooms with condensation (bathrooms, kitchens), as moisture can weaken adhesion.

7. After Painting – Long-Term Care

Once the paint is dry, keep humidity below 60% and avoid scrubbing the wall for at least two weeks. When cleaning later, use a soft cloth to prevent peeling.
