Anti-Slip Paint Solutions for Pool Areas

1. Why anti-slip paint is essential around pools

Poolside areas are constantly exposed to water, splashes, sunscreen oils, and foot traffic, making surfaces extremely slippery. This significantly increases the risk of accidents, especially for children and elderly people.Anti-slip paint creates a textured surface that improves grip, reducing the chance of slips and falls.

2. Types of anti-slip coatings

  • Textured coatings (with aggregates):

Contain sand or fine particles to create grip

  • Rubberised coatings:

Soft underfoot, ideal for barefoot walking areas

  • Epoxy anti-slip coatings:

Highly durable, suitable for heavy-use zones

  • Acrylic non-slip paints:

Most common for residential pool decks, UV-resistant and breathable

👉 For most homes, acrylic anti-slip paint with added texture is the best balance of safety and cost.

3. Best surfaces for application

Anti-slip coatings can be applied on:

  • Concrete pool decks

  • Pavers and tiles (with proper primer)

  • Timber decking (with compatible systems)

Each surface requires a slightly different preparation process.

4. Surface preparation (critical step)

  1. Clean thoroughly (remove dirt, algae, oils, sunscreen residue)

  2. Pressure wash if needed

  3. Allow full drying

  4. Repair cracks or uneven areas

  5. Apply suitable primer

⚠️ Slippery surfaces are often caused by poor preparation—not the paint itself.

5. Application tips

  • Apply in dry, mild weather

  • Use even coats and avoid overloading roller

  • Mix anti-slip additive thoroughly

  • Apply at least 2 coats

  • Allow curing before use (24–48 hrs minimum)

6. Colour and design considerations

  • Light colours: Stay cooler under the sun

  • Mid-tones (grey, beige): Hide dirt and wear best

  • Avoid glossy finishes—they increase slipperiness

👉 Matte or textured finishes are safest.

7. Maintenance and safety tips

  • Clean regularly to prevent algae build-up

  • Reapply coating every 2–4 years depending on wear

  • Inspect high-traffic areas frequently
